Een van de eerste cd’s die ik ooit kocht was ‘Blauw’ van The Scene. Daar stonden ook meteen m’n twee grootste favorieten ‘Rigoureus’ en ‘Iedereen is van de wereld’ op. Prachtig hoe muziek bijzondere momenten van vijfentwintig jaar geleden weet op te roepen en tegelijkertijd ook nu nog zo relevant kan zijn. Alweer acht jaar geleden zag ik hem voor het laatst op Marktrock in Leuven. Het lijkt als de dag van gisteren. 

Thé Lau is niet meer maar voor mij blijft hij altijd van deze wereld. Rust zacht.

♫ Max Richter – King of Sleep

Sounds like Max Richter has composed this for me! Sleep is pretty sacred to me, already as a child I loved to sleep. It’s a way of processing the day (and life in general I suppose)

He has composed a classical eight-hour lullaby that’s appropriately titled ‘SLEEP‘. This piece will be premiered in Berlin this September lasting from midnight to 8 a.m. During this heavenly concert the audience will be lying in beds. Seems like a dream to me and wish I could be there!

You can buy the full eight-hour version digitally on September 4 via Deutsche Grammophon. A one-hour version of the piece will be released on CD, vinyl, and digitally.

What Richter says about it: ‘We spend a third of our lives asleep and it’s always been one of my favourite things, ever since I was a child. … For me, SLEEP is an attempt to see how that space when your conscious mind is on holiday can be a place for music to live.’


However, I’m not convinced that my conscious mind is ever on holiday.. Can’t wait to listen to this! Here’s a teaser..

It took me 8,5 years of listening and discovering lots of different kinds of music to reach one hundred thousand songs on Last.fm. This website has brought me a lot of new music and friends and still does! Pretty special that Petter Carlsen, my favourite Norwegian singer is my number 100.000 (I didn’t want to cheat so it’s absolutely random)! Let’s see how long it’s gonna take to get to 1.000.0000. I might have to leave my music on when I sleep..

Beginners

A good friend convinced me last night to watch Beginners by director Mike Mills by mentioning this line from the movie: ‘Our good fortune allowed us to feel a sadness that our parents didn’t have time for and a happiness that I never saw with them.’ That sounded like my kind of feel for drama (as in movies that is).

 
After Oliver’s (Ewan McGregor), mother has died, his father comes out of the closet at age 75. He has been suppressing his feelings all the way through marriage with Oliver’s mother. His father, played by Christopher Plummer, dies of cancer not too long after, and Oliver gets to take care of dog Arthur. The story starts about there and goes back and forth to his childhood and the present where he meets Anna (Mélanie Laurent, amazing actress!) at a party. Anna can’t speak because of a laryngitis and writes everything down on a notepad. First thing she writes: ‘Why are you at a party if you’re sad?’. That was my first cry during this movie.

Their relationship develops into something serious and you see the pushing and pulling which is heartbreaking to see. They both don’t know how to handle true love.

It kicked in big time because of stuff like this..

Hal: Well, let’s say that since you were little, you always dreamed of getting a lion. And you wait, and you wait, and you wait, and you wait but the lion doesn’t come. And along comes a giraffe. You can be alone, or you can be with the giraffe.

Oliver: I’d wait for the lion.

Hal: That’s why I worry about you.

Too many things too familiar.. They don’t speak a lot and when they speak, they say the right things. Love this movie!

La Isla Minima

Afgelopen weekend keek ik de Spaanse film La Isla Mínima van Alberto Rodríguez. Wat ik niet wist, was dat een hoop beelden van deze film zijn geschoten in de Coto de Doñana, het grootste natuurreservaat van Spanje. Laat ik daar nou net komende week naartoe gaan! Erg leuke verrassing om zo alvast een indruk te krijgen.

De film zelf speelt zich af in 1980 in Andalusië, Spanje. Twee tienermeisjes worden vermist in een dodelijk saai en kansloos stadje. Iedereen lijkt er weg te willen in de hoop op een betere toekomst. Vele andere meisjes zijn al vermoord. Twee rechercheurs met totaal verschillende karakters worden op de reeks moorden gezet. Juan, vrouwenversierder die een nogal foute rol had tijdens het Franco regime, en Pedro, brave (toekomstige) huisvader, moeten hun verschillen opzij zetten om de moordenaar te vinden die dit stadje al jarenlang terroriseert.

♫ Heather Woods Broderick – Wyoming

Wyoming, a wonderful, dreamy new song of Heather Woods Broderick, is out. It has been six years since her debut album has been released. In the meanwhile she has been touring with Horse Feathers, Sharon van Etten and Efterklang (together with her brother Peter Broderick). Glider, her second album will come out on 10 July. The video has been taken at the coast of Oregon.

The mysteriously sounding A Call for Distance was the first single of her new album. Expectations are high now but I promise you won’t be disappointed!
